Accommodation

Antigua - Boutique Hotel

  • Elegant, beautiful, and full of history. One of the best hotels in hotels in the city. Located in the colonial area of the city.

  • Breakfast is served at your convenience in their beautiful terrace from where you can see the volcanos around the city. The perfect view to start your day with.

  • We are recommending the room with two queen beds for you.  It is spacious, comfortable, and simply beautiful with an Antigua vibe.

Lake Atitlan - Eco Friendly Hotels

  • We have two hotel options, different types of hotels.  Both are gorgeous, located at the lake, with bar and restaurant, amazing views, great service and amenities, and both socially/environmentally responsible. Both offer yoga, and activities.

    • OPTION ONE - Suite - Few rooms, all suites,  "luxurious" for Lake standards, top rated.  Very romantic. Only double rooms/suites.

      • First six photos

    • OPTION TWO - Small cabin with private bathroom - Multiple rooms. Hotel for everyone (larger groups, backpackers, couples).  Still beautiful and much less expensive.

      • Last 5 photos

Flores - Small 4 Star Hotel

  • Flores is a small jungle town near Tikal.  This is the only place with electricity after sunset, and also options for things to do at night. Elegant, beautiful, and full of history.

Proposed Itinerary

I am proposing a week full of outdoor activities with enough time to relax and enjoy the physical beauty and culture of the region.  Please take a look and let me know if you like the plan or would like to add/remove anything.

Day One - Tuesday - May 21st

  • Arrival - Our driver will be waiting for you at the airport to drive you to Antigua Guatemala.  This ride lasts about an hour.  The estimated time of arrival at the apartment would be 01:00 to 01:30 PM

  • Afternoon - Perfect time to explore the city.  We can make a reservation for you at one of our favorite restaurants for lunch and/or dinner,  and give you tips/recommendations for places to visit and explore.

    • We could also offer you a guided walking tour of the city. Let me know if interested

Day Two - Wednesday - May 22nd

  • Morning Time - Enjoy the town, shopping, Lunch

  • Afternoon - 2PM - Depart to Tikal .  Prepara to be impressed by the wonders of the Mayan civilization. Tikal, being one of the largest Maya sites, is located in the northern Guatemalan rain forest and is often called the soul of the earth. This magical place is guaranteed to be an unforgettable adventure.

    • Shuttle to TAG Hanger. Small plane hanger

    • Flight to Flores (One Hour)

    • Arrive at Flores around 6PM

    • Free Night to explore town

Day Three - Thursday - May 23rd

  • 07:30 AM - Shuttle to Tikal. First, short stop at local airport to pick up other passengers.

  • All Day exploring Tikal park until 3:30 PM

  • 6:30 PM Flight back to Antigua

  • 8:30 PM Estimated arrival in Antigua

NOTE: We could do Tikal as a day trip as well. Departing at 4AM and returning at 8:30PM the same day. I am recommending over night to give you the chance to explore a different side of Guatemala at least for one evening, time to rest/recover, and also because the difference on price would just be the cost of the hotel.  About $120 for both of you.

This is not a cheap activity, but Tikal is simply incredible., the most impressive  Mayan ruins in the country. It also meets two of your requests: Ruins and Jungle.    We could look into closer and smaller ruins like Iximche that are closer/cheaper, but not as impressive.

Day Four - Friday - May 24th

  •  Late Morning - Departure to Lake Atitlan - Prepare to see one of the most beautiful landscapes in Guatemala.  This lake is surrounded by volcanos, and small villages founded by Mayan descents, and colorful landscapes.  Our day starts with a 3 hour ride to the lake.  Once there, you would catch a boat shuttle to your hotel.

  • Afternoon -  Village tour and horseback riding.  This is perhaps the best way to enjoy the beauty of the area, and get to see a bit from the culture and traditions of the area.

  • Night Time -  Enjoy the beauty and piece of the hotel and its surroundings or coordinate a bote ride through the hotel to one of the villages where you can find some night life.

Day Five - Saturday - May 25th

  • 10:00 AM - Return to Antigua.

  • 03:00 PM - Sunset ATV Tour - This is the best way to take in the beauty surrounding the city.  You will visit some of the best view points located in the mountains around the city.  They are restaurants and eco-lodges with gardens, bars and cafes you can enjoy while taking in the best views of the city.

    • I am thinking private, but we can also requested to join a group trip.

    • We could also do this one the first day, if you arrive early in the day.

Day Six - Sunday - May 26th

  • Late Morning - Volcano Hike (4-5 hours) -  Time to visit the Pacaya Volcano. This is one of the most beautiful and dangerous attractions near antigua.  This active volcano is surrounded by a lot of beauty and also results from recent eruptions.  A unique and impactful trip.  Private transportation and guide.

    • Hike is about 1 1/2 hours.  Not the easiest hike but for definitely a rewarding one. The vies from the top are incredible, and you can see lava and steam depending on how active the volcano is.

    • You can choose the departure time.  The latest to leave would be 1PM.

  • The earlier you return, the more time you will have to explore more of the colonial Antigua. The streets and the colonial architecture are beautiful, but also are the ruins of many monasteries, convents, and churches that were destroyed and/or abandoned after the multiple earthquakes that hit the city last century.  I recommend walking to at least one of them (e.g. Capuchinas, Santo Domingo)

Day Seven - Monday - May 27th

  • Departure - Our driver will be ready to pick you at this time. You should arrive at the airport about 1.5 hours later.  Once we have flight information, we could confirm time.

    • If you were to prefer spend the last night at the lake (see other itinerary options below), the driving time to the airport would be about 3 to 3.5 hours.

Other possible Itineraries could be:

  1. Airport - Antigua

  2. Antigua - Tikal

  3. Tikal - Antigua

  4. Antigua- (ATVs)

  5. Antigua - (Volcano)

  6. Antigua - Atitlan

  7. Atitlan - Airport

OR

  1. Airport - Antigua

  2. Antigua - Atitlan

  3. Atitlan - Antigua (ATV)

  4. Antigua - Tikal

  5. Tikal - Antigua

  6. Antigua (volcano)

  7. Antigua - Airport

PLEASE NOTE:

  • Nights out - Night life in Antigua is rather calm.  There is a number of interesting bars and places to grab good cocktails, but not many dance clubs.  There are one or two dance clubs (gay friendly), and a monthly gay party (actually happening that weekend).

  • Lunch/Dinners -  I can provide recommendations and make reservations for dinner in Antigua.  Let me know if you would like me to do this or you prefer to explore on your own.  Flores and the Lake are small and limited options.

  • Transportation - No need to reserve additional transportation within Antigua.  The colonial area is very walkable.

Other Options for Activities in Antigua

  • Bike tour in Antigua

  • Day Time ATV tour

  • Coffee Plantation tour

  • Walking tour of the city

Estimated Cost â€‹and additional notes

  • With the itinerary as laid out on this proposal, including staying in OPTION ONE hotel at the Lake, the estimated cost is $2949

  • If you choose OPTION TWO hotel at the lake, the estimated cost would be $2659

  • Final cost will be confirmed once all activities and itinerary are defined. Remember we can add, remove, modify, etc.

  • Some ways to reduce cost would be to have shared shuttles from and to the lake instead of private; group Volcano Hike instead of private; just do day trip to Tikal; or replace Tikal with closer/smaller ruins; stay extra night at the lake instead of Tikal; etc.  Let me know what you think for now, and we can take it from there.

  • Tikal is by far the most expensive activity. Almost a third of the cost.  You could also go on bus, but it would take at least 12 hours each way.

  • There are other options for stops, but sometimes traveling there would require a lot of time. For instance Semuc Champey.  which requires a 3-day journey.

Let me know if there are any questions, special requests, or changes.  We can continue to tailor this plan until you are completely satisfied.   This is just the beginning

THANK YOU
