destination: Cartagena & medellin

Dec 8-17 (Update)

Hello again,

This is un updated version of the plan for your trip to Cartagena and Medellin.  Few changes from the last version:

  • This plan reflects 9 nights/10 days.

    • 3 nights in Cartagena (8, 9, 10)

    • 6 nights in Medellin (11, 12, 13, 14, 15, 16)

      • One night of these will be in Jardin as well.

  • Budget around $300 per night

  • Cartagena price reflects the cost of the private island hopping experience and one regular activity.

    • We have added stand up paddling in Cartagena.

  • Medellin price reflects two additional nights in Medellin, rental car for three days total, two local activities, and one night accommodation in Jardin.

We can continue to tailor schedule to add or move activities as you desire.

Cartagena - Dec 8 - 11

  • I like to find accommodations in El Centro or Getsemani, both make up the colonial part of the city.  This is the more interesting and touristic part of of the city.

    • El Centro is the main part of the colonial area. Larger houses, plazas, and hotels are located here.  As well as the main churches, museums, and shops.

    • Getsemani is a bit more residencial/less affluent than El Centro. You can still see locals living in there, but it's become a hip part of town. Many call it the Brooklyn of Cartagena. Full of small bars, clubs, graffiti art. younger crowds, and more. Some of my favorite restaurants, cafes, and bars are located here.

  • I have three options for you today. One is a small guest house under our standard package value, and two others are options we can offer with the additional $100 per day upgrade.

Private Home in El Centro- $1172

  • Private room/bathroom in private home. A small and charming guest house. Only three rooms.  A lot of character, simple, but comfortable and with great hosts.

  • House has lounging areas, small rooftop, and a small pool for guests to enjoy.  Hosts are super friendly and knowledgable of the city.

  • This house is located in El Centro, but in quiet street. Away from the noise, and close to a large supermarket.

  • CONS: It's the simplest of the options. As it is typical in Old houses in Cartagena, hot water is not available (Honestly it is not needed since it is so hot, but not everyone can get used to that)

Possible Schedule

  • Saturday, Dec 8th

    • Early arrival.  Pick up at the airport.

      • It is recommended to exchange some money at the airport.  You can do it all there, or save some to exchange later in the city where the rate is usually better. ATMs offer the best rate, but be aware of international charges.

    • It might be too early to check in, but you can leave your bags and most likely freshen up before heading out to explore the city for the first time.

    • Time TBD - Private History Bike Tour (2 hrs)- Depending on where you stay and what time you arrive, we will determine a place and time to meet your guide.   Enjoy of a beautiful morning exploring the entire old town area.  Make sure to remember the spots you like, so you can return later on your own.

  • Sunday, Dec 9th

    • 10:00 AM - 06:00 PM - Island Hopping. I recommend not later than 10:30am to enjoy the day as much as possible,  but you get to choose the time.  Take taxi or Uber to pier, where your Captain and assistant will be waiting for you.   This is a great experience; an opportunity to cruise around the beautiful Rosario Islands and Barú. You can stop to swim or snorkel. There will be beaches where you can stop for drinks, music, and lunch.  Closer to the date, I would  give additional directions and recommendations.

      • Feel free to bring your favorite drinks. There will be a cooler with ice, and a delicious gift from me to enjoy onboard.

  • Monday, Dec 10th

    • Before Sunset - Stand Up Paddle - Grab a taxi to El Laguito, (5-10 minutes from El Centro) to the surfing academy where you will meet your guide.  This is a group setting, and right before sunset time. Materials and guide provided.  Enjoy the beach bar and views before or after.  I will provide exact details for location and time before trip.

  • Tuesday, Dec 11th

    • Travel day

Options for Additional Activities (Under $40 p/p)

  • Mud Volcano - Transportation and entrance to Totumo Volcano

  • Mercado Tour - Transportation and guided tour of local mercado (market)

  • Street Food tour - Eat your way through old town. Guided

  • I will be happy to share my favorite restaurants, coffee shops (for your 3 daily coffees), bars, museums, plazas, and dance spots.

Medellin - Dec 11 - 17

  • I recommend for my guests El Poblado. It is one of the most modern, friendly, and fun areas of the city.  Tons of restaurants, cafes, and bars to explore.

  • Medellin is relatively a small city. Getting around is easy, Uber is available; and although El Poblado is not central, it is within 15 minutes car ride of most parts of the city.

  • I am showing you two different options. One is a private apartment, within the budget of our standard package, and the other one is a beautiful BnB we can include with the additional $100.  BnB like places in this area of the city are not common, and therefore I don't have that type of accommodation under our standard package.

Private Apartment In El Poblado- $1640

  • Minimalist apartment with all the essential amenities to make your stay comfortable

  • Located close to restaurants, parks, cafes, etc.

  • One bedroom, with living room. Full kitchen

  • CONS : Continental breakfast. Not Bnb or guesthouse

Options for Jardin Accommodations

For Jardin, I am thinking two kinds of accommodations.  One would allow you to experience de beauty of the region since it is located outside of town, and the other one would offer you perhaps a easier access to the town since it is located near the town main square.

  1. Guesthouse near town center - Cozy, comfortable, just a walk away from the main square.

  2. Cabin up in the mountains - Amazing views, private, 10 min drive from the town.  Cabin is part of a larger house, where hosts live.

Possible Schedule

  • Tuesday, Dec 11th

    • Arrival. Pick up at the airport

    • Depending on time of arrival I would recommend things to do, areas to visit. or we can schedule an activity.

  • Wednesday, Dec 12

    • Drive to Guatape - Drive to Guatape is about 2 hours.  I haven't had a guest drive before, but I would be happy to provide as much direction and tips as possible/requested.  You can drive to El Peñol, check out the lake, and visit the town of Guatape; where you can grab lunch and spend some time walking around the town.

      • Cost of car rental is included. Also plan to include GPS, and some insurance cost, unless you have coverage and it's not needed. Fuel not included.

      • Renault Captur/Mazda CX5 or similar, automatic, small SUV.

      • Car rental agencies located near accommodation.

  • Thursday, Dec 13th

    • Free Day - See options for activities below

  • Friday, Dec 14th to Saturday, Dec 15th

    • Exploring Jardin -  Drive to Jardin is about 3.5 hours.  The area is beautiful, once in town you can enjoy walking around, the plaza, colorful streets, restaurants, cafes, etc.  Visit coffee growing and roasting farms, etc.  I can work with host to work on convenient options for you.

      • Rental car included as above for two full days to allow you to pick up early one day and drop off later the next.

      • One night Accommodation and breakfast included.

  • Sunday, Dec 16th

    • Free day - See options for activities below

  • Monday, Dec 17th
