destination: Cartagena & medellin

Dec 9-16

Hello again,

I present to you the first plan for your trip to Cartagena and Medellin.  Accommodations and activities I believe you will enjoy based on your input.

  • This plan reflects 7 nights/8 days.

  • I am recommending 3 nights in Cartagena (9, 10, 11) and 4 in Medellin (12, 13, 14, 15), but we can arrange those dates as you desire based on your interests.

  • Budget between $300 and $400 per night

  • Cartagena prices reflect the cost of the private island hopping experience. I am including one regular activity and the island day as the included activities.

  • We can include less activities (less expensive) or more to have the perfect schedule and price.

We can tailor this plan as much as you want until you are completely happy; Number of nights in each city, accommodations, activities, etc.

I am excited to have the opportunity to help you with this trip. Thank you for the opportunity. We will create the best trip possible.

Cartagena - Dec 9 - 12

  • I like to find accommodations in El Centro or Getsemani, both make up the colonial part of the city.  This is the more interesting and touristic part of of the city.

    • El Centro is the main part of the colonial area. Larger houses, plazas, and hotels are located here.  As well as the main churches, museums, and shops.

    • Getsemani is a bit more residencial/less affluent than El Centro. You can still see locals living in there, but it's become a hip part of town. Many call it the Brooklyn of Cartagena. Full of small bars, clubs, graffiti art. younger crowds, and more. Some of my favorite restaurants, cafes, and bars are located here.

  • I have three options for you today. One is a small guest house under our standard package value, and two others are options we can offer with the additional $100 per day upgrade.

Option One - Standard Option - Private Home - $1100

  • Private room/bathroom in private home. A small and charming guest house. Only three rooms.  A lot of character, simple, but comfortable and with great hosts.

  • House has lounging areas, small rooftop, and a small pool for guests to enjoy.  Hosts are super friendly and knowledgable of the city.

  • This house is located in El Centro, but in quiet street. Away from the noise, and close to a large supermarket.

  • CONS: It's the simplest of the options. As it is typical in Old houses in Cartagena, hot water is not available (Honestly it is not needed since it is so hot, but not everyone can get used to that)

Option Two - Boutique Hotel in El Centro - Upgraded rate - $1325

  • Beautiful small hotel located in the heart of El Centro.

  • Gorgeous rooftop bar/restaurant with great views of the city and small pools for guests to enjoy.

  • Colorful and vibrant rooms with balcony. Comfortable bathroom. Overall a great value for the price.  Only standard room still available for these dates and under this price. Next option up, which I usually book is already sold out.  Nevertheless, room is still a great option with a king size bed, espresso machine, mini bar, working station, etc.

  • CONS: Since it is located in a busier area, it can be a little louder than the others.  Although this room is not affected by the noise from the rooftop, it is good to point out rooftop bar stays open until 1am.

Option Three - GuestHouse in Getsemani - Upgraded rate - $1400

  • Small BnB with beautifully decorated rooms, a lot of character, lounge areas, and terraces, outdoor jacuzzi, views of the city. One of my favorite places to stay in Cartagena.

  • Personalized attention, great hosts, and services.

  • Private room/bathroom in private home (one of the best rooms)

  • CONS: The furthest from the center, out of the listed option, (10-15 minute walk).  This also mean quieter though. Which is a plus.

Possible Schedule

  • Sunday, Dec 9th

    • Early arrival.  Pick up at the airport.

      • It is recommended to exchange some money at the airport.  You can do it all there, or save some to exchange later in the city where the rate is usually better. ATMs offer the best rate, but be aware of international charges.

    • It might be too early to check in, but you can leave your bags and most likely freshen up before heading out to explore the city for the first time.

    • Time TBD - Private History Bike Tour (2 hrs)- Depending on where you stay and what time you arrive, we will determine a place and time to meet your guide.   Enjoy of a beautiful morning exploring the entire old town area.  Make sure to remember the spots you like, so you can return later on your own.

  • Monday, Dec 10th

    • 10:00 AM - 06:00 PM - Island Hopping. I recommend not later than 10:30am to enjoy the day as much as possible,  but you get to choose the time.  Take taxi or Uber to pier, where your Captain and assistant will be waiting for you.   This is a great experience; an opportunity to cruise around the beautiful Rosario Islands and Barú. You can stop to swim or snorkel. There will be beaches where you can stop for drinks, music, and lunch.  Closer to the date, I would  give additional directions and recommendations.

      • Feel free to bring your favorite drinks. There will be a cooler with ice, and a delicious gift from me to enjoy onboard.

  • Tuesday, Dec 11th

    • Free Day or additional Activity - I can give you ideas and recommendations to enjoy your free day, but I am also happy to coordinate additional activities for you.  Options below

  • Wednesday, Dec 12th

    • Possible travel day

Options for Additional Activities (Under $40 p/p)

  • Mud Volcano - Transportation and entrance to Totumo Volcano

  • Mercado Tour - Transportation and guided tour of local mercado (market)

  • Stand Up Paddle - Fun activity in the bay around sunset!

  • Street Food tour - Eat your way through old town. Guided

  • I will be happy to share my favorite restaurants, coffee shops (for your 3 daily coffees), bars, museums, plazas, and dance spots.

Medellin - Dec 12 - 16

  • I recommend for my guests El Poblado. It is one of the most modern, friendly, and fun areas of the city.  Tons of restaurants, cafes, and bars to explore.

  • Medellin is relatively a small city. Getting around is easy, Uber is available; and although El Poblado is not central, it is within 15 minutes car ride of most parts of the city.

  • I am showing you two different options. One is a private apartment, within the budget of our standard package, and the other one is a beautiful BnB we can include with the additional $100.  BnB like places in this area of the city are not common, and therefore I don't have that type of accommodation under our standard package.

Option One - Private Apartment - $1200

  • Minimalist apartment with all the essential amenities to make your stay comfortable

  • Located close to restaurants, parks, cafes, etc.

  • One bedroom, with living room. Full kitchen

  • CONS : Continental breakfast. Not Bnb or guesthouse

Option Two - Boutique BnB - Upgraded Rate - $1600

  • Gorgeous BnB located near the vibrant part of the city, but yet far enough you feel you are in the outskirts. Nice gardens and lounging areas. Really good hosting experience.

  • Beautifully decorated rooms, great service.  This one has a small terrace. Intimate setting

  • CONS : Walk to restaurants and bars is a little longer (10 minutes), but still pretty close. Taxi or Uber might be better for the way back as it is located up hill.

Possible Schedule

  • Wednesday, Dec 12th

    • Arrival. Pick up at the airport

    • Depending on time of arrival I would recommend things to do, areas to visit. or we can schedule an activity.

  • Thursday, Dec 13th

    • Drive to Guatape - Car rental agencies available in EL Poblado.  Drive to Guatape is about 2 hours.  I haven't had a guest drive before, but I would be happy to provide as much direction and tips as possible/requested. We would take care of car reservation.

      • Road is in good condition, but mostly only one lane each direction, and a lot of turns/curves as you are going through the Andes.

  • Friday, Dec 14th

    • Activity - See options below (Included)

  • Saturdays, Dec 15th

    • Activity - See options below (Included)

  • Sunday, Dec 16th

    • Depending on time of arrival I would recommend things to do, areas to visit, or schedule an activity.

    • Departure

Options for Activities

  • Private City Bike Tour - Great way to explore and learn about the city (This can also be in a group)

  • Private Mercado/Street food tour - Eat your way through colorful neighborhoods and market.

  • Barrio Tour - Tour a neighborhood that represents the changes Medellin has gone through, from the past that made Medellin famous to the present that makes a sample to follow world wide

  • Graffiti Tour - Street art has become one of the main artistic ways of expression in the city, and particularly transforming neighborhoods. Let's check it out

  • Coffee Crawl - Do we need to say more? Taste some of the best coffee in some of the best spots of the city
